Unique DC-based journal for all has articles of interest

The Washington Map Society ([1] www.washmap.org) has just announced the availablilty of the Winter 2005-06 issue of thier thrice-yearly journal, The Portolan to the general public.

Founded in 1976. the Society is a DC-based enthusiast organization whose aim is to promote map collecting, cartography, and geographic history. The Portolan compiles articles of interest submitted by members, reviews of maps and map publications, and proceedings of the Society and those of other groups as well as events in the world of maps.

This term’s Portolan, number 64, offers the following articles:

• “Cartographic First Fruits of the Lewis and Clark Expedition”, by James V. Walker
• “The United States Post Office Department, Division of Topography and its Role in the Establishment of Rural Free Delivery”, by Virginia Mason
• “The State Department’s Office of the Geographer: History and Current Activities”, by Leo Dillon
