Two-day Conference to examine the mapping of the USA in her first century

The North Carolina Collection, University Library, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, have just announced an upcoming two-day conference examining the state of American mapping during most of the republic’s first century.

The meet, entitled Maps for The New Nation: Mapping and Cartography of the United States, 1776-1860, is scheduled to run from 3-4 November 2006, with both sessions in the Louis Round Wilson Library of UNC–Chapel HIll.

The talks, delivered by a variety of guest speakers, cover subjects such as 19th Century American School Atlases, the past and future of mapping, and the Coastal Survey of 1807, and is scheduled to end with a recption and viewing of a new North Carolina historical maps exhibit.

Fees for the two-day conference are $50 for the full conference (including banquet) and $20 for sessions-only. Attendance cap is 130, so early registration is advised.
