Becuse of the exposure that Quark has in the design world, the mistake in the creation of their logo has great resonance. However don’t forget that this could happen to you.
Behind every story there is a moral. The moral behind Quark’s logo-look-alike story is: “It can happen to you, too”. The recent events are just an example of what can occur when trademarks and intellectual property laws are not understood. Pariah S. Burke makes a very good point of this in Quark VS InDesign, where he says:
Anyone who deals with intellectual property—which is to say, anyone who designs anything, not just logos—must understand the basic principles of intellectual property law, including how trademarks work. Gene’s article on CreativePro.com is an overview, an introduction, where any designer should begin.
Pariah Burke’s article, Quark’s Logo–It Could Happen to You, trascends the noise created by the discorcenting Quark stumble and brings to light the underlying problem. Based on an editorial from Creativepro.com, the article is an invitation to stop listening to the noise for a minute and have an unbiased look at the recent events. Whether you like Quark or not it’s irrelevant in this case, the point here is–make sure you understand what intellectual property is, so you don’t follow this notorious example.
