Glyph: While it might seem a term coming from the Egyptian alphabet, the term “glyph” actually applies to any letter, character (such as @ ! & %) or number. It’s a generic term indicating any of the above—whereas you can call the @ symbol a “character”, you certainly cannot call it letter or number. So the term glyph has been coined to indicate just any letterform, including ligatures.
