If you have ever used Scribus, and if you have tried the new version especially, drop me a comment, I would like to know what you think about it. If there are enough people interested in Scribus, I might even write a few tutorials.

  1. Scribus is pretty awesome, when you think about it. It’s a free page layout program that is pretty strong. It allows for bezier and free form pencil shapes, and let’s you embed images. For me, it really feels like it’s pulling from InDesign, PageMaker AND Quark all at the same time. If you get used to creating the objects, you see that modifying the object properties is pretty easy.

I would say some areas to research would be, how to create a PDF with registration marks, how flexible is the text wrap.

Also, any XML support? How is the object hierarchy useable / portalbe? File format information, and reusability. I believe it’s useable and some crashing bugs will be worked out for the 1.4 release on windows.

If anyone here wants to take on a real challenge, build a server version of this program and allow online page creation from a scribus client. The market is ready.

  2. I messed around with the Win version of Scribus for a few hours. Seems ok, but could not get used to the toolbar positions. Too wedded to the Adobe (InD, PM and Ill) way of doing things I guess.

The biggest problem I see with Scribus as far as getting a foothold on Win PC’s and Macs is the fact that it’s free. Yes sounds crazy!!! However, many still underate apps such as Xara and PagePlus because of their lower price and thus get called “amatuer”….

That said, if marketed properly, Scribus could be a challenger in the lo-cost DTP market, esp as it’s free. I would market it in two ways.

Firstly, as a way to take on not so much InDesign and QuarkXpress, but PagePlus and esp MS Publisher.

Secondly, as a way to wean people off using Word as a DTP application.

There are now few reasons not to have decent layout tools. All thats needed is the time to learn…

  4. Hi… I’ve just discovered scribus as I am rebuilding our webtop publishing system here at work…

My idea is to use scribus as Smick challanged us to do ;)

Today we use Pageflex .EDIT in our systems and I’m looking for an open source solution that can do the same stuff…

Havent found it yet so I’ve downloaded the scribus source… hopefully It’s possible to convert this software to a client server system for webtop publishing… If someone is interrested in getting involved please contact me by mail.
