Regular Feature: Freeware Friday

Every other Friday, I will be telling you about two freeware programs I like to use and where to find them. Usually there will be one Mac program and one Windows program, since I use both platforms daily. All you will find on D:Illustration is real freeware: no nags, no adware, no shareware.

This week, I have a couple more free apps for working with color for you. The first works on both Mac or Windows platforms, and the others are Mac only.

Color Write
Freeware
Windows or Mac
Requires Java Runtime Environment 1.3 or up
Download Color Write

Color Write not only generates color in RGB, CMYK, and HSV, it generates color schemes, and it exports palettes. Not only that, but it writes the CSS, HTML, or java code for you to use in your html documents. Simply click on the type of code you want to use and it is automatically placed on the clipboard ready to be pasted into the document. The price for all these features? Free. Yep. Free!

To use Color Write, you need at least JRE (Jave Runtime Environment) 1.3 on your system. If you use Mac OSX, it is already installed. If you are a Windows user, and you aren’t sure if it is installed, the download page for Color Write tells you how to find out and where to download and install.

ColourMod
Mac OS X Tiger
Download ColourMod

Colour Mod is a Dashboard Widget for Mac OS X Tiger that allows fine tuning of colors and is very flexible. And like all the apps featured on Freeware Friday, it’s free.

Picker
Mac OS X Tiger
Download Color Picker

If you are looking for web safe colors, Picker is a Dashboard Widget that lets you drag the mouse over the web safe color palette and preview the color. Clicking on the color in the palette displays the hex code in the program and copies it to the clipboard.
