[...] As I poured over possible blog topics this morning, I was going to write a rant about so-called ‘do it yourself logo design’ - these flash driven logo generators that seem to be popping up all over the place (and currently occupying spots #8, #9 and #10 if you run a search for ‘logo design’ on Google). Checking my bookmarks, there’s a couple of pretty decent takes on this already written (and as I’m feeling particularly lazy at 6:22 am this cold wednesday) here’s what the The Zehnkatzen Times has to say with their lowering the bar even farther article from last year. Designorati has a similar take with their ‘Do it Yoursef logo’ op-ed piece. We’ll take a more in-depth view once the coffee’s kicked in… [...]

You know it sounds like those sites where you can design a business card by selecting various on-screen elements such as founts, graphics, colour schemes and so on.

Whilst I agree in most part with what Elisabetta (aka Trinity) says, what is intersting is that tutors on the print and graphics design degree course I'm currently doing sing the praises of such sites.
They point to such sites as the future (in part) of print and design.

Personally, I'd much prefer to do my own logo with my own software using my own skills. At least i know I'm getting something much more likely to be unique and something I can call my own creation.

I just tried the design sequence on the website. Even on dialup I was through in just about a minute.

The logo is returned to you in four forms: 300 dpi color and grayscale TIFF; 72 dpi transparent GIF, 72 dpi grayscale. You can get it in a choice of either2-inch, 3-inch, or 4-inch sizes.

Why not all three sizes if you're going to charge punters $99 for 'em.

Shameful.

Ye Gods.

I don't know what's more appalling; the sterile, soulless impression I get from the samples, the feeling that they all came out of a clip-art book, or the realization that they make you pay $99 to do you're own damn work!

Give the devil his due though; that said, I'm a bit depressed that you can talk people out of a considerable amount just to come use your website.

Devaluing graphic design? Indeed.
