  1. I have tried a couple of the Xara tutorials, I especially love the gradient tool and making brushes.

  2. I have tried some of the tutorials and I used to own an early version of the software. I am looking forward to learning much more on the new course. I am very impressed with the new version.

  3. I use Photoshop CS2, but everyone on the Yahoo forums are talking about Xara Xtreme. I had used Xara v.1 a long time ago, but want to learn more about this newest rebdition.

    19 January 2006

  4. I haven’t played with Xara too much but from what I have seen so far it is going to a great program. I’m sure glad to know that there is a class beginning in March so us ‘newbies’ can learn from a talented instructor.
    Thanks

  5. I primarily use Adobe Illustrator, and so I am unfamiliar with Xara (and I know I am not alone.) I think it would be great to have an article to help transition people from Illustrator to Xara. You could have feature comparisons and demonstrate techniques which are easier to execute or produce better results in Xara.

I think that is a great idea, Nick. I think you are right and that would make a great series of articles..thanks for the idea!

  7. I have used Xara tryouts from time to time and although a former CorelDraw user and a current Illustrator user, I was impessed over the speed of Xara. It’s very quick even with on a PC with little RAM and old CPU.

I hear there’s going to Linux and Mac versions of Xara. I feel the Mac version will not only be a good idea, but may be neccessary if Freehand is discontiued.

  8. I have downloaded the trial version, but realize I will need Sara’s class to fully understand the workings of Xara. I love the creativity that will come with full use of the program and look forward to knowing how to execute it. I found a great tutorial for intertwined names using Xara for a wedding table card “logo” and I am trying to decifer cloning, containers and clipview . . . not having much luck, but look forward to mastering it . . . hopefully before the wedding in April!

  9. Congratulations to Wendy for winning Sunday’s copy of Xara Xtreme! We will have a new drawing Monday night for the next copy. Stay tuned!

    22 January 2006

  10. I’ve been using the trial for Xara and it’s really awesome. I love the transparency, and the speed. It takes a little bit to learn, but their marketing really holds true, it’s much faster and fun to use.

How to I enter this giveaway? Just post this comment?

That’s all! You are now entered! I agree with you: it is a wonderful program, full of great features. Even the fact that it runs on even older versions of windows is a plus…that says to me it is not a resource hog like some programs.

    23 January 2006

  12. Dear Sara, and the rest of the Designorati staff,
Wow . . . I never win anything, this is terrific. Thank you so much! I will now sign up officially for Sara’s course and hopefully will begin to understand and utilize the program . . . and will definitely get my names and initials really intertwined before April for the wedding place cards! Again thank you so much, I really look forward to Xara Xtreme.

  13. You know what I would really love to learn how to do in Xara? I’d love to know how to quickly take an object and do a quick duplicate around a radius. So, say you have this ball and you want to create 12 of them. You can go into rotate mode with the graphic and set the axis of rotation. But from here, I’d love a function that let me do a “spin duplicate” so the object could quickly be made.

Another thing I’d like to do is learn about various ways to stroke objects. Can I stroke the outside border of a polygon with a bitmap image of my head as a border?

    23 January 2006

  14. Never even heard of Xara. But I love new apps!

    23 January 2006

  15. Monday’s winner is Chris Wunderlich. Congratulations, Chris! We will be drawing the Tuesday winner late Tuesday night.

    24 January 2006

  16. Dear Sara:
Today a friend recommended to visit your website, I am so happy she did. I will love to take the Xara Xtreme and other courses that are schedule for next March. I am a designer and I see lots of potential for me to learn and know about this software. Thank you!!!

    24 January 2006

  17. Tuesday’s Winner of Xara Xtreme is Nick Gagne. Congratulations, Nick! We still have four more copies to give away this week so stay tuned!

You are very welcome! I love all vector software and Xara Xtreme is a fantastic way to get into vectors if you are new to drawing and illustration programs, and for designers like you and others who use other vector software already, it’s a wonderful addition to your toolbox. It is very fast and a pleasure to use!

  19. I’ve been searching for software to help wih graphics mainly for the internet, but have found photoshop, gimp, etc. to have a learning curve that is a little more than I can take. Recently found Xara Xtreme and their other associated programs—cool stuff!
We’ve been testing the trials and they are user-friendly!!! A big plus in my book. I don’t kneed to be the greatest but I do need to get a fast professional look without killing time.
    Good stuff Xara!

    25 January 2006

  20. I’ve been researching the net for an Illustration software for the last few weeks. I thought I’d settle on CorelDRAW, but after commenting that I wanted to find something with ease of use and easy to learn, I happened to click on a Xara link! Everything I’ve read (and all the demo movies I’ve watched) seems to have sold me on Xara! I’m an amateur, but learn quickly and think that I could tackle Xara (with tutorials!) I have downloaded the trial of Xtreme to begin playing - a free copy would be wonderful!

    25 January 2006

  21. I have had a go at Macromedia freehand, Alias sketchpad just to name a few, and just recently I had a go at Xara Xtreme. It “draws” the way I think such a program should. It takes my rough lines and makes them illustrations - nice smooth lines. It is user friendly and easy to learn. It was a joy to use.

    26 January 2006

  22. I have really enjoyed using Elements but have been hesitating about Xara because I am not an artist and wonder how much I would really use the program. When asked to draw anything I freeze…….will I still find uses for the program given that I am not an artist?

    26 January 2006

  23. Lynn, I think you should try the trial and some of the tutorials…XaraXone has tons of them…and then you can see if it is right for you, but you do not have to be an artist to use it.

    Sara

    26 January 2006

  24. Lynn, try this URL to see some work done in Xara. A lot of it is composites and are right up your alley!

  25. Mac type here, but Xara is being ported as we speak….
Wife has a PC and has mentioned that she would like to try out Xtreme. Am checking it out now. So far, looking very good……

  26. I am actually a Mac Type too (ambidextrous I guess, I use both every day), and I was very happy to hear about them porting it to the Mac. I wrote an article about it here on D:Illustration…I thought it was fantastic news, and I will be first in line to try it out when it’s ready!

I think your wife will love Xara!

  27. Believe it or not I still use Microsoft PhotoDraw! I should get a copy of Xara out of sympathy, if nothing else!

I’ve finally come to my senses and I have been looking for a replacement for PhotoDraw. When I came across Xara I was blown away. I can’t wait to get a copy. I’m a programmer, but I need to make lots of graphics. I don’t even want to try to learn PhotoShop. Xara looks perfect for me.

    26 January 2006

  28. It wasn’t pity, Dennis, although your comment certainly made me smile! And I agree with you Xara will be a joy for you to use, but I have just done the drawing for Friday’s copy and your name was drawn. Seems you are a lucky man! I will be making the formal announcement shortly.

    Sara

    27 January 2006

  29. I have heard so much about this program on Yahoo groups that I think I have to try it! –Especially since I don’t really have to be able to draw!! I love to try new ways to do graphics and use them in my scrapbooking.

    Kay

    28 January 2006

  30. And the winner of the final copy of Xara Xtreme is…drumroll, please! Grace Sturgess!

    Congratulations, Grace!

I also want to thank everyone who entered! Please stay tuned to D:Illustration for Xara Day the fourth Thursday of every month. The first Xara Day tutorial on the Blend Tool has been posted here.

Don’t forget we have How-To’s Day every other Tuesday where I will post a tutorial on various graphics software.

  35. I came across Xara Xtreme while looking for a cheaper alternative to Macomedia Freehand (Adobe Illustrator is way out of my budget). I downloaded a copy, gave it a good few hours of trying and was amazed at what it can accomplish while not slowing down my notebook to a crawl. With the pretty hefty discount available on first of August, I don’t think I will even wait to see if I got lucky :p

    01 August 2006

  36. I’m 15 have jus come across Xara Xtreme and was quick to download the 15 day trial. I have a keen interest in vector art and thought that this should be the software to start practising on. 1st day of trial and i have already a piece of art, simple than my other drawins that i was doin on corel art dabbler more an airbrushing style (art dabler is rubbish in my opinion only because it lacks functions found in adobe and other illustrator programs). I want to become a graphic designer, and this seems to be the program for me. Its a shame it will all end in 14 days time.

    17 October 2006

  37. Check Xara’s website. They often have specials and Christmas is coming…maybe put in a request to Santa!

It really is a wonderful program!

    17 October 2006

  38. I use Adobe Illustrator. Never have used Xara anything. I’m definitely interested, especially since I am now working for a publishing company.

    22 December 2006

  39. Well being that I am not a proffesional artist and have three children , it has been hard to justify buying a copy, but I do love to draw . Xara is pretty impressive I would rather do freehand than copy a picture though, does it work with a pad and pen? okay there is my post god bless
