Caligari, Inc., is a software firm rightly famous for a popular 3D drawing package, trueSpace. [1] Now in version 7, it boasts quite in impressive range of capabilities and, judging by the chatter on such sites as [2] SciFiMeshes, has a great number of fans.
trueSpace 7 will run you around $600–this is a serious tool for serious artists. What if you want to find out for yourself what 3D drawing is like without breaking the bank? Well, we found out in our reading of the forums at SciFiMeshes that Caligari offers trueSpace 3 (the current version in 1997/1998) for absolutely free.
It’s a little bit of a secret–the page isn’t referenced by anything on Caligari’s page; we had to Google for it. [3] You can find it here. Judging by what we saw some people do with it, it may not be cutting edge but it sure will give you an intro to 3D meshing. We weren’t able to try this; it apparently only works on the Wintel platform, so downloader beware on this one…and have fun!
