Dan Margulis, one of the foremost experts in color correction, has announced his semi-retirement and will stop writing after this year.
This is from Dan’s e-newsletter:
As I announced in the last newsletter, this will be the fourteenth and, regrettably, last year for the Makeready column. While I continue to think very young, the time has come for me to segue into a lifestyle that leaves more time for the things I enjoy most. There are no health or personal issues–it’s just time to move on.Read more on Dan Margulis Announces Semi-Retirement, Will Stop Writing…

As I announced in the last newsletter, this will be the fourteenth and, regrettably, last year for the Makeready column. While I continue to think very young, the time has come for me to segue into a lifestyle that leaves more time for the things I enjoy most. There are no health or personal issues–it’s just time to move on.It also is my current intention to cease writing books after this year, but you never know. I do not intend to cut back traveling or class schedule at least through the end of 2007.
However, in 2006 Dan will appear only at Photoshop World, NAPP’s twice-yearly conference, as well as teach his regular Applied Color Theory courses among others.

Here is some more detail on Dan’s decision to withdraw from the Photoshop scene:
“As matters stand, though, I am disinclined to do a halfway job. As noted earlier, my current intention is that this book will be my last one. I’m part of the first generation of Photoshop “experts”, which is now getting long in the tooth. Some of us are still firing on all cylinders; others are no longer able to make the same intellectual contribution that they used to. If anybody thinks that I belong in the second group at present they are welcome to read Canyon Conundrum and see if they still feel that way.
“It is, however, inevitable that I will join the second group at some future point, wherefore I propose to cut and run now. If Canyon Conundrum were the last book I ever write, I think that even ten years from now people will say that I went out with a bang. I would like the final edition of Professional
Photoshop to be on that same level. And, of course, if I get the writing itch again sometime, not every comeback ends in failure.”

Maybe Dan just needs a new subject. He seems to have a flair for melodrama. Movie scripts or day-time soaps should be his new focus.
