Regular Feature: Freeware Friday

This may be the largest source of free Photoshop brushes, gradients, plug-ins, textures—practically everything! You must have this in your bookmarks.

FreePhotoshop.com is a great resource for increasing your Photoshop functionality and your stock of image materials. A lot of the website is devoted to reviews of freeware and commercial plug-ins, complete with links to the various sources. All well and good, but the Free Downloads section is full of free items:

  • Brushes
  • Shapes
  • Gradients
  • Styles
  • Plug-Ins
  • Textures, Displacement Maps and Patterns
  • Frames
  • Photoshop files

I like the Ripleyer filter, which creates lines across your image to make a television-screen effect, and the Crescent Moon filters which have a variety of effects.

The downside to FreePhotoshop.com is its age: created in 2002 and last revised in December 2005, it still offers a PNG plug-in in order for Photoshop to “read or write PNG format images, PNG being said to be the next big graphical format”.

Be sure to also check out the Miscellaneous Things page, which has some good actions, FAQs and even a page about Photoshop Easter eggs which has some my own does not.

It’s not the most spectacularly designed site in the world, but it’s a good resource and I recommend at least a visit and, if you’re like me, a bookmark as well.
