Strokes are the actual marks that glyphs are made from. They come in two main species:

The stem is the thick stroke in the illustration alongside. The hairline is the (comparatively) narrow stroke.

Hairlines need not be necessarily a hair’s width; the term is one of comparative description, though some fonts, such as Bodoni, come very close indeed.
