I think that's a very elegant suggestion.

One of the reasons Dreamweaver's so popular, IMO, is that people like the way the GUI works. In my experience, the Dreamwaver GUI has just a bit of an edge over the GoLive GUI.

That means quite a lot to people.

I have never got on with Adobe GUI so was very happy when Dreamweaver CS3 was the same as before. I hope Adobe know how to keep existing users happy, so if they do decide to mess around, they at least give us Macromedia fans a tick box to put it back the way it should be.

I've been using DW CS3 a lot in the past few months and I have a couple comments:

• Spry/AJAX is cool and easy to implement. However, it doesn't seem to work in all browsers (it does for the major ones) and for me it's confusing to know which elements to apply Spry to. I was working with some effects on images within layers, and it seemed applying the effect to the layers did not work but the images did. Another point: IE users who have ActiveX disabled will not be able to see Spry effects (this is usually not a problem).

• I am disappointed DW CS3 did not adopt the CS3 interface, because to me a unified interface solution helps usability. Fireworks and Contribute CS3 also suffer from this, and I know Fireworks CS3 didn't get an interface makeover because the engineers had to choose between that or adding the web prototyping features in order to meet the launch deadline. I really hope we see the interfaces unified in CS4!
