Dynamic Flash doesn’t have to hurt, I promise.
Let’s face it, as a designer you probably don’t have time to make minor updates to every web site you’ve ever worked on, which means you have to make this process as easy as possible for your clients. This is why we create dynamic sites. I’ve seen countless tutorials explaining dynamic text in Flash go on and on for pages with several necessary companion files, all of which are overkill. In a few painless steps (six, in fact) you can make updating the copy of your Flash movie as uncomplicated as editing a .txt file.

Don’t believe everything you learned in journalism school; becoming great at headline design is a learning process with a lot of room for flexibility and creativity.
Are you making the most of your headline options? From font sizes and choices to different ways to layer information, here are some tips gleaned mainly from experience:
Basic how-to information on three tools in your typographic toolbox.

If you use them right, you aren’t using them all the time, but when you need to use them, you ought to know how. Here’s the basic skinny on three well-known but somewhat taken-for-granted typographic filips.

A few quick tips for common tasks
Designers and Desktop Publishers perform many typographical tasks while designing. Typography used to be handled by specialists who did nothing else, but in modern times, with applications that are always in development, typographical tasks have become easier and can be done with the same equipment and software used to produce layouts–designers have to know the basics of typography as no one else is taking care of that for them now. This tutorial will cover three amongst the most common typographical tasks as they are handled with InDesign CS & CS2: the use of typographer, proper, quotes, bulleted lists and dot leaders.

Adobe Acrobat gets better and better at preflighting PDF files for resolution, fonts and color. But with Photoshop, Illustrator and a little ingenuity, you can preflight all these things without the usual preflighting tools.

Flyers, business cards, letterhead an so on are not usually printed on sheets of paper of the size we see them every day. Printing firms use bigger sheets of paper that will contain more copies or pages of a certain publication, flyer and so on. These big sheets, called parent sheets, are then folded and cut as needed to give us the printed product in the final size, which is what we see.
You pay for magazines and newspapers, would you do so for news sites and blogs?
While navigating the net I came across an interesting question from someone who had just seen BlogIt, readers who want to avail themselves of the content on that site have to pay subscription a fee–the question was therefore whether it was worthed to pay for such a service.

Disney acquires erstwhile computer animation partner famed for cartoon hits such such as ‘Toy Story’; Steve Jobs to become member of Disney board

The Walt Disney Company have just announced that they have aquired Pixar Studios for an asking price of USD$ 7.4 Billion, according to a Disney press release dated 24 Jan 2006.
Pixar, which began life in the mid-1980s as the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd before being spun off as Pixar in 1986 and subsequently being purchased by Steve Jobs (then head of NeXT) for a mere USD $10 million, began with animated shorts and commericals before moving on to partener with The Walt Disney Company in the mid-90′s. This has been a productive partnership which has resulted in a string of Pixar-produced hits, including Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo, as Disney’s own animated productions debuted to reviews that were, at best, comparatively ambivlalent.
Most germane to the design community in terms of tools, Pixar also produces the animation software RenderMan.
The news is particularly interesting in light of the recent history of cool relations between Disney and Pixar. The two companies broke off talks aimed at extending their distribution deal in 2004, reportedly due to a strained relationship between Jobs and then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner. Disney losing Pixar looked to be one of the big imminent stories. This deal was set to expire this year.
However, with the change of leadership signified by new Disney CEO Robert Iger, once-cold relations thawed, resulting in a deal that will not only grant Disney access to the creative talent of Pixar for the forseeable future, but also inducts Apple head Jobs into the Mickey Mouse Club; not only will Jobs join the Disney board but also become its largest shareholder.
At this writing, Pixar is set to release its next feature, Cars, which was to have been the final film under the Disney distribution deal, this summer.
