Wiley releases Typographic Design:Form and Communication, 4th ed, updated for a new age of typographic studies.

Lately we’ve seen our share of updates of long-time standard textbooks for the education of the budding typographer. From our point of view, we think we’ve started to discern a pattern that all ought to follow if they hope to impart a good sense of the spread of typographical lore, knowledge and wisdom:

The news, posted by Dan Margulis tonight on the Color Theory list, pays much homage to the “father of digital color management”.

Bruce Fraser, Photoshop pioneer and considered one of the most important influences on how Photoshop interprets and manages color, died yesterday after fighting a terminal illness. From Dan Margulis’ post to the Color Theory group:
The past nine months have seen an unprecedented level of disclosure from Adobe Systems, Inc. first with committing to a firm release date, sneaking a look at InDesign CS3, and today with the announcement of Photoshop CS3 as a public beta–the first in Adobe’s history.
According to a Reuters news bulletin published moments ago, Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen refined his March 2006 promise to ship Creative Suite 3 in the 2nd Quarter of 2007. Despite conflicting announcements expected from today’s Adobe Systems, Inc. fourth quarter fiscal 2006 earnings conference call with shareholders, Reuters reports Chizen has having stated that Adobe will ship “the biggest release in Adobe’s history” at the end of 2Q2007, which could be as late as June.
AppleInsider.com announced the rumor earlier that the long-awaited CS3 may be released as a public beta. Now they say that Photoshop CS3 itself will be released as a beta on Friday, December 15, 2006. Will it happen?

- Combating the Stigma of the Overpriced Designer
Show your clients why it’s the designer who sits in front of the monitor
At some point in your career a client (or two) will question why they should pay exorbitant fees for designs that on the surface look pretty simple to produce. Let’s face facts, people who are “outside of the loop†of this industry lack an appreciation for the effort that goes into producing a clean, well executed layout or identity. After all, why would they? All they really end up seeing are the polished ideas. They aren’t included in on the oodles of hours spent brainstorming concepts, research and rounds of sketches that can fill a small coffee table book. More often than not, they only see an attractive and deceptively simple looking final result of all that labor and development.

Acrobat 8 Professional New Features Create A Worthwhile Upgrade
I’ve been working with the new Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional, which was released a couple weeks ago. When it was first announced it seemed that most, if not all, of the new features in the upgrade were for the corporate customers rather than creative professionals who use Acrobat for print PDF production and editing. But after getting my hands on the application itself and using it in my daily work, I’ve discovered several features within Acrobat 8 that make it a worthwhile upgrade for creative professionals and corporate users alike.
