Electric Rain has announced Harmonyâ„¢, which converts Flash SWF content into XAML format.
Electric Rain is leveraging some cool new things happening with Windows and the creative pro community by creating a new application called Harmony, which will take Flash SWF movies and convert them into XAML, an XML-based language for defining user interfaces with the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). I’m sure you noticed the word “Windows” in there—this is a Windows-only thing at the moment. Microsoft is working to bring it to other platforms (and it must do this to create a viable rich media experience), but this has not quite happened yet.

Movie traces history, trends, entertains with unabashed opinions and unequalled insights
To watch the singular movie Helvetica is to laugh and to understand.
The movie, produced and directed by filmmaker Gary Hustwit, has been making waves ever since its debut at the South By Southwest (SXSW) 2007 festival, selling out its showing there, and selling out most every showing at every venue it’s appeared at, and generating the sort of buzz other pictures with they’d had along the way.

During a conversation this month with Doris Brown, Pantone’s marketing head, I learned that InDesign CS2 shipped with Pantone color specifications that were out of date not long after CS2 was released.

The Adobe store is having a special deal for those holding out for the CS3 Master Collection.
I noticed on the Adobe website that, if you purchase the CS3 Design Premium or Web Premium suites, you can get the CS3 Master Collection for the difference in price when it is released in the third quarter of 2007. This does not appear to apply to the less robust CS3 Design Standard or Web Standard suites.

I got my copy of CS3 Design Premium yesterday at about this time; here are my first impressions about it.
I am always a little bit surprised how nervous/excited/anxious/ecstatic I get when I get new equipment for my work: it’s like another visit from Santa Claus! CS3 was just released and I got my copy of Design Premium, and I haven’t felt this excited since I got my MacBook Pro last fall. CS3 is a very big deal for Adobe: it’s the largest product rollout they’ve ever done, it’s the first time the Macromedia applications have been truly integrated with the Creative Suite, Adobe’s video applications are back with the Mac for the first time in a few years, and there’s a whole new look to the packaging and the icons (which took a beating when they were first announced). By the way, alternative icons that match the CS3 packaging can now be found here.

Etelos has been releasing some neat CRM apps lately, but it’s something totally different that caught my eye: new technology that allows Web 2.0 applications to work without an internet connection.

In an effort to add value to their swatchbooks, Pantone is adding limited-edition color guides and software to its packages. Will this spur designers and printers to update their swatchbooks annually?

Pantone’s new adhesive chip sheets make those broken-teeth perforated chip sheets obsolete.

The chip sheets we’ve all seen stashed on the shelves of ad agency and design shops are about to change. In the past they’ve been simply perforated and torn apart as needed, leaving a mess of chips lying around if they’re not taped to the client’s job jacket or other materials. I never used them much, and I’m glad I didn’t have to—I’m an organized guy, and don’t like a mess. Pantone has listened to customers and released PANTONE SOLID CHIPS peel and place coated chips, which are already adhesive-backed and can be peeled up multiple times for ease of use. Along with the sheets, Pantone has released new PANTONE palette cards that the chips can be stuck upon when shown to clients or filed away in the job jacket.
Pantone doesn’t want you to just discard your old swatchbooks—they want you to annihilate them. Do it in a spectacular way and you may get some cool prizes.

Pantone really wants you to replace your swatchbooks (called “PANTONE FORMULA GUIDES”) annually. They are offering the PANTONE COLOR INSPIRATION/2007 and COLORIST software to make the decision easier. If that isn’t enough for you, how about an opportunity to destroy your guides and get an Apple® iPhoneâ„¢ and Apple TVâ„¢ for your troubles?! Here’s the story: Pantone just launched the PANTONE Color Kill Contest on YouTube, where you can view people destroying their swatchbooks in all kinds of creative ways: hanging pages on the Christmas tree and shredding are popular. Post your video on YouTube and you get a 35% discount off the purchase of a new guide (you’ll need one, since you destroyed your old one…).

As rumored here, Adobe released a portion of their upcoming Production Premium suite—After Effects CS3 Pro and Premiere Pro CS3.
After Effects CS3 Pro and Premiere Pro CS3 are not being released until the third quarter—unlike Adobe’s print and web applications—but Adobe did release public betas of these two applications. After Effects CS3 Pro can be found here; Premiere Pro CS3 can be found here.

The CS3 suites and the main applications are available now!
Today Adobe released the Creative Suite 3 applications and suites comprising the Design Premium and Standard suites, as well as the Web Premium and Standard suites; you might have read my article here that mentioned the release date beforehand. As for the CS3 Production Premium and Master Collection suites, which include Adobe’s video editing applications, those will not be available until “the third quarter of 2007.”
I keep getting press releases from Mobio about their GetMobio Mobile Lifestyle Portal—but I don’t work much with mobile devices, so I haven’t given it much thought. Until now.

I learned today that Adobe’s date to begin shipping the CS3 Design Premium and CS3 Web Premium suites is Monday, April 16, 2007. Click here to learn what applications are in each package. As far as I can tell, there’s no word on the CS3 Design Standard or CS3 Web Standard suites.
e frontier, the company that makes Poser and Shade among other graphics software, announced a free exporter for Poser 7.
Photoshop CS3 Extended, with new abilities that work with 3-D objects, can now work with Poser 7 3-D graphics. e frontier, the company that puts out Poser, is offering a free exporter that will make Poser 3-D content importable as Photoshop 3-D layers. Not only that, but they are offering free 3-D content that can be used with Photoshop CS3 Extended, including figures, props and packaging templates. The cool thing is that there’s no extra software required—as long as you have Photoshop CS3 Extended, you are ready to go. Photoshop CS3 Extended is expected to ship late this month.

The trade show. It didn’t seem as large as it had in the past, but there were some really neat products out there—it makes you realize the creativity of everyone working hard making products in this industry. Media Lab, creator of SiteGrinder 2, was on hand—and Tom Summerall was so busy demoing the product for attendees that I couldn’t say hi. One company who had an unusually large presence was Microsoft, who wasn’t showing any products but had their name on one of the trade show theaters. I thought that was cool, but will anyone ever embrace Microsoft as a company devoted to creative professionals? A notable absence from Photoshop World was Apple, the company that puts out Aperture. I have to assume that the conference was so heavy with Lightroom seminars and promotions (at almost any given time, a Lightroom session was going on somewhere), Apple either didn’t feel it was worth it or was not even accepted (or allowed) into the show. Lightroom is just getting off the ground, and I and others thought Photoshop World was used to promote Lightroom as well as CS3.
