Adobe’s CS3 release of its electronic layout warrior sparkles, shines, and impresses; it’s gone from page layout tool to Power tool.
The cat is out of the bag.
It’s an exciting time for Photoshop!

I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited for Photoshop, except maybe Spring 2004 when Photoshop CS was new and Bryan Lamkin announced the DNG file format at Photoshop World (well, DNG hasn’t turned out to be as groundbreaking as PDF, but it was still exciting). Creative Suite 3 is now getting out into the public’s hands. Photoshop CS3 was actually not emphasized as much as Illustrator, Flash and other products when CS3 was launched a couple months ago, and it’s pretty obvious this is because Photoshop CS3 has been around for months now as a public beta and recently was confirmed by John Nack to have been downloaded by a half-million people. There’s all kinds of Photoshop CS3 videos, tutorials and tips out there at places like lynda.com, NAPP and photoshopcafe.com. A post from John Nack’s blog with links to various free sources can be found here.
I am impressed by Tim Grey’s book Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroomâ„¢ Workflow—it’s thorough, well-written, and walks you through the ideal Lightroom workflow, from start to finish.

Photoshop Lightroom is not all about Camera Raw—it’s about workflow. Camera Raw has been the buzzword in the digital photography industry for a few years now, but Lightroom is a response to the question of handling these images from import to printing and presentation. It can be a complex process but Lightroom makes it easy—and Tim Grey’s new Sybex book Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Workflow walks you through the full workflow options available with the application.

It’s a feast for type lovers with dot-font themed collections and a book celebrating FontFont by two who were there
There’s a surfeit of good books for the typophile lately, with a decided accent on history and what makes type work. Adding to this most recently are Mark Batty Publishers, who are gaining a reputation (with this reviewer, anyway) of publishing books that display type and the history of digital type in its best possible settings, with beautifully-designed editions by very readable authors. The three volumes we’ve recently seen go into the nuts, bolts, and critical aspects of digital design.

The online color community from Adobe Labs delivers themes right into AICS3-via RSS
Many illustrators and Illustrator users now make use of an innovative new venture from Adobe Labs–Kuler. This is more than a source for inspiration. From your web browser you can compose, share, get feedback on, give feedback on, rate, and generally contribute to a color-interested community.
I was curious to know how the Photoshop CS3 beta and Photoshop Lightroom beta differed in how they shaped their respective application—so I went right to the source and asked John Nack, Photoshop’s product manager.

Ambitious project seeks to overlay subjective impressions onto physical landmarks
When we think of atmosphere we think of the way we feel about places–cozy or charming, intimidating, dull, or whatever.
Artist Christopher Nold, however, has brought the concept of the polygraph out of the dry world of law enforcment and linked it up with cartography, calling it emotional mapping. This consists of three stages: first, have a volunteer wired up with GPS and polygraph technology; second, have that volunteer wander a neighborhood area, noting feelings and reactions to their surroundings; third, interviewing the volunteer to further qualify the subjective information recieved.

On 1 May 2007, library fans everywhere and United States historians in particular were shocked and saddened to hear that the Georgetown Branch of the Washington DC Public Library system, located at Wisconsin Avenue and R Street NW, suffered a catastrophic fire that destroyed much of the building. The branch was, at the time, closed for renovations.

Scene7, known for its online solutions for dynamic imaging and electronic catalogs, is being acquired by Adobe.
I’m familiar with Scene7 for its eCatalogs, Flash-based print catalogs online. I’ve created something similar for a client of mine and got to know Scene7′s products when I researched my own project. It appears I’m not the only one who was impressed with what I saw—here’s the press release:
I have been asking this question to folks like John Nack and Tom Hogarty, but I never felt I had got to the root of the matter. I asked another Adobe person this question last week, and his answer makes the most sense.

Here’s the results of my Q&A:
