  • Lightroom Moves Quickly To Version 1.1

Photoshop Lightroom was expected to develop quickly, but this move to 1.1 was unexpected—as was the robustness of the upgrade.

Lightroom 1.1 is available for download (Mac and Windows) at its product page on Adobe.com. Scott Kelby noted that the new 1.1 version feels more like a 1.5 (maybe a version 2 will be coming up soon?), and he also has several video and web resources on Lightroom 1.1 here.

  • Contribute CS3 Makes Easy CMS Even Easier

If you want an easy yet effective CMS solution right off the shelf, Contribute is a good selection—and the CS3 upgrade offers a few new vital features.

    contribute cs3 box

Contribute is what I use when my clients need some kind of content management system (CMS) without hiring a web programmer or spending a thousand bucks. Since I design websites with Dreamweaver, the integration with Contribute is seamless and it’s easy to specify what is editable by the client and what remains editable only by me. I was curious to review Contribute CS3 because Contribute in general gets very little press but Adobe certainly feels it’s an important part of their product lineup. Contribute was one of the Macromedia products recently brought into Adobe’s product portfolio due to last year’s Adobe-Macromedia merger, and it’s a second-tier product so I expected it to get less attention and less new features with the CS3 upgrade. I think that’s true: Contribute CS3 is not a quantum leap forward from its predecessor, Contribute 3. However, the application runs well and the new features it does have are exciting ones.

  • InCopy CS3: The Editor’s Right Hand

CS3 release of Adobe’s editorial collaboration tool provides give-and-take with designers while allowing editorial to get the job done.

It’s not included with any CS3 edition, not even the Master collection, but if you have a designer working with multiple editors, it’s an application you really ought to know about.

  • InDesign CS3 Bug When Printing Multiple Copies

The more copies you print, the longer it takes to queue. For those printing hundreds of copies, this is a pain.

I recently helped out on InDesignSecrets.com by troubleshooting a new bug in InDesign CS3. It appears that it takes InDesign longer to queue a print job in proportion to how many copies you are printing. If printing one copy takes one second, printing 50 will take 50 seconds, 100 copies will take 100 seconds, and so on. This is not normal behavior compared to previous versions and it’s a potential logjam for those printing hundreds of copies of documents. I think it is affecting only Macintosh users, since it seems it’s the combination of Universal Binary and Intel Macs that is causing it (see the workaround below).
